We are supporting the fight against sugar

The number of primary school children admitted to hospital with rotting teeth has reached record levels.

There was a 20 per cent rise in admissions last year, Government data reveals, and dental decay is now the most likely cause of a stay in hospital for children aged 10 and under.

At least two thirds of the 62,000 admissions last year are estimated to be due to tooth decay or gum disease.

Many children are admitted for multiple extractions and experts say a lack of access to dentistry and an increase in the consumption of sugary food and drink is largely to blame.

Parents take action on reducing sugar intake

Parents are leading the way in the fight against increasing childhood tooth decay with almost half of them showing their support for sugar-free treats.

Christmas has well and truly taken hold in stores across the country and this time of year can be difficult for parents as pester power from children ramps up a few notches.

But, according to an online poll by the British Dental Health Foundation, parents are fighting back with almost half of those surveyed saying they had would prefer to give their children sugar-free sweets as a healthier alternative.

Ban on smoking in cars ‘significant step’ for children’s oral health

From Thursday [1 October 2015], smoking in vehicles with anyone under the age of 18 will become illegal in England and Wales - a move which will have a profound effect on children's oral health - according to the UK's leading dental charity.

The British Dental Health Foundation has previously highlighted how passive smoking puts children at higher risk1from tooth decay and problems with their oral health development.
The charity believes this move will have a hugely positive effect in protecting children and young people to the extreme dangers of inhaling second hand smoke.
